Composite cordierite honeycomb structure is especially suitable for diesel exhaust filtration applications, including non oxide polycrystalline accounted for 10 - 70 wt%, the remaining group of ceramic materials by constituting a cordierite phase, non oxide polycrystalline phase selected from the group consisting of carbide, nitride and boride. The non oxide phase is preferably polycrystalline silicon carbide or polycrystalline silicon nitride with a particle aspect ratio of less than 3. The present invention is a porous ceramic body, an open porosity of at least 30%, preferably between 40% and 60%, and at least 5 micrometers, median diameter greater than 8 micrometers and preferably less than 12 microns.
